Coastal Wandering
I was once asked where I am happiest making photographs. The answer was simple and immediate: anywhere on an interesting coast. This means I spend a lot of time making sorties to the shorelines of Britain and around the world. As this collection shows, my favourite places are either along the 6,500 mile coastline of Scotland or the even rockier and more dramatic coasts of northern Norway.
The light is always different by the sea. The sea brings its own light. You always know when you are getting close to a coast because the light changes, becoming more luminous and more saturated with colour. This is not mere whimsy but a real effect caused by the fact that the air along the coast is almost always more saturated with moisture due to the pounding of the sea and the evaporation of water. I find that both the sea itself and coastal edges provide opportunities to make a remarkable range of images, hence my frequent coastal wanderings.
