Quiet Corners
I think it is often in the quiet corners that one finds the most interesting urban moments. Akin to the more intimate parts of the natural landscape, I believe these opportunities offer a glimpse of ordinary lives being lived without fanfare or noise. It is always a heady moment for a photographer schooled in the hard northern light of Britain to savour the colours, the deep black shadows and the riotous patterns that seem innate to so many parts of the Mediterranean coast. Accordingly, like so many visitors, I can rarely resist the challenge of trying to capture the light, the luminosity, the colour, and the warmth of shady streets and quiet moments. At the same time, it is the same approach I use to make complementary images in cold British winters. Wherever I am, I am a sucker for a ‘quiet corner’; always striving to convey the feeling of the moment and to suggest, not only how a scene looked when the image was made, but also how it was to be there.
